Galvanised Shelving

Galvanised Shelving That Outlasts the Building

Galvanised shelving is steel hot-dip coated in zinc, giving a metallurgical corrosion barrier that outlasts powder coating. Built for cold storage, coastal and high-traffic industrial sites. Specified correctly, it outlasts the building.

What is galvanised shelving?

Galvanised shelving is steel submerged in molten zinc at around 450°C. This is not a surface coating that sits on top of the steel. The zinc bonds metallurgically, forming a barrier that is part of the steel itself.

That distinction matters. Zinc is more electronegative than steel, so when the surface is scratched and bare steel is exposed, the surrounding zinc corrodes first to protect it.

The steel does not rust. The system is effectively self-healing, and gets more stable as it ages.

A powder-coated system can start failing within five years in the wrong environment. Hot-dip galvanising is the correct finish for cold storage, coastal warehouses, food production and corrosive industrial areas across South Africa.

Where galvanised shelving works best

Cold storage & food facilities

Constant condensation, temperature swings and aggressive wash-down chemicals destroy powder coating over time. Galvanising handles them.

Coastal locations

Within ~1 km of the coast in Durban or Gqeberha, atmospheric corrosivity hits ISO 9223 category C5 (very high). Galvanising is the correct spec.

Industrial inland areas

Corrosion trouble spots like the East Rand, with particulates and industrial pollutants, where standard powder-coating underperforms.

High-traffic warehouses

Daily forklift impact and knocks are shrugged off without compromising structure or needing repainting.

Retail, garages & workshops

The industrial look suits customer-facing spaces, and oils and solvents that attack paint don't faze galvanised steel.

Galvanised Shelving FAQs

When should I choose galvanised shelving over painted?

Choose galvanised for cold rooms, refrigerated warehouses, food processing, outdoor stores and coastal sites. Galvanising bonds zinc to the steel, protecting against moisture, condensation and corrosion. Powder coating is fine indoors and dry. If it is wet, cold or salty, go galvanised.

Why is galvanised steel described as self-healing?

Zinc is more electronegative than steel. Scratch galvanised shelving and expose bare steel, and the surrounding zinc corrodes first to protect it, so the steel does not rust at the scratch. The zinc then forms a stable patina that slows further corrosion, so the system gets more stable with age.
